Department Overview

Established in April 2018, the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at Fudan University is Shanghai's leading institution dedicated to cultivating outstanding talent in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. The department focuses on four primary disciplines: Meteorology and Atmospheric Environment, Climate Systems and Climate Change, Atmospheric Physical and Chemical Processes, and Marine Meteorology and Physical Oceanography. Our mission is to train highly skilled experts in these fields while aligning with national strategic objectives and addressing critical local needs.

Since its inception, the department has strategically harnessed the university's multidisciplinary strengths, promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration with fields such as oceanography, environmental science, public health, and data science. We are committed to exploring the complex interactions within the Earth system through both theoretical and observational approaches. Our efforts in fostering international talent development are geared towards establishing a world-renowned, research-oriented talent training center.

Our faculty includes 17 distinguished professors from Fudan University, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. We have established advanced laboratory platforms such as the Key Laboratory of Polar Atmosphere-Ocean-lce System for Weather and ClimateMinistry of Education;  Shanghai Key Laboratory of Ocean-land-atmosphere Boundary Dynamics and Climate Change; Laboratory of Marine Meteorology, China Meteorological Administration-Fudan University; Shanghai Frontiers Science Center of Atmosphere Ocean Interaction. These state-of-the-art laboratories provide exceptional support and resources for training talents in atmospheric and oceanic sciences. In recent years, the department has been granted substantial research programs, including a Basic Science Center Project, a Major Program, six Key Programs, and two Key Programs of Major Research Programs from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). Additional funding includes two National Key Research and Development Program of China, three Key Major International Cooperation Programs, a Shanghai Research Base Program, a Key Program of Shanghai, and a Guangdong Key Research and Development Program. The total research funding exceeds 200 million yuan. Over the past five years, our faculty and researchers have published over 1000 academic papers, with nearly 300 articles published in leading international journals such as Nature, Science Advances, PNAS, and BAMS, with our department as the primary affiliation.

Research Focus Areas

1. Meteorology and Atmospheric Environment: focus on the formation and evolution mechanisms of high-impact weather and climate events, their predictions, and the connections between weather and climate variability, air quality, and atmospheric composition.

2. Climate System and Climate Change: focus on the interactions among the different components of the climate system (the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, biosphere, and lithosphere), climate variability predictions, the temporal and spatial characteristics of climate change, its underlying mechanisms, impacts, and projections, and the interactions between climate change and human activities.

3. Atmospheric Physical and Chemical Processes: focus on cloud-radiation-aerosol-precipitation interactions, the mass and energy exchanges between the atmosphere and land or oceans, and the interactions between human activities and the atmosphere.

4. Marine Meteorology and Physical Oceanography: focus on the dynamics and thermodynamics of oceanic processes that impact weather and climate, the ocean-atmospheric coupling processes, and the development of new theories and methods to improve forecasting of marine meteorological events.

Academic Collaborations

Our department encourages graduate advisors to engage in joint training programs for students, particularly doctoral candidates, both domestically and internationally. We provide opportunities for students to study abroad, thereby broadening their international perspectives.  To date, more than ten students from our department have received funding from the China Scholarship CouncilCSCto study abroad. Additionally, we encourage our faculty and students to actively participate in domestic and international academic conferences to share and communicate the latest research developments in their fields.  Moreover, each semester, our department invites renowned experts from around the world to deliver lectures, thereby fostering the exchange of knowledge across disciplines.

Alumni Achievements and Career Paths

To date, our department has produced three cohorts of graduates, including a total of 37 undergraduate students, 56 master's students, and 29 doctoral students. Among them, 11 have been recognized as Outstanding Graduates of Shanghai and 17 as Outstanding Graduates of Fudan University. In 2023, the employment rate for our undergraduate students reached 92.3%, while the employment rate for our graduate students was 92.7%. Nearly 30% of our graduates have chosen to continue their studies either domestically or abroad. The majority of those who entered the workforce have taken positions in meteorological units and departments, universities, and research institutions. Some have been selected as provincial civil servants or directly recruited as military officers, while others have chosen to work in industries such as computer science and finance.
